Specialist Marine Design & Consultancy
Technical Support for Yacht & Powerboat Projects
Thank you for visiting my web site.
I have been involved in the design and technology of yachts and powerboats since the early 1970s. This experience is supported by both academic and professional qualifications including an honours degree in Ship Science and a masters degree in Manufacturing Management.
In 2002 I opened my own design office at Warsash beside the River Hamble. Since then I have offered my services as an independent Naval Architect, Yacht Designer & Consultant, providing technical assistance to a wide variety of clients, including entrepreneurs, owners, boatyards, designers and organisations.
Whether it is advice on an individual technical matter, or the design of a complete yacht or powerboat, I aim to provide a thorough and cost-effective service to support the client’s requirements for the project.
In recent years a number of unique and interesting yachts, boats and special service craft have been designed for clients, ranging from the 1.5m (5ft) Starfish dinghies currently building in the UK, to the 30m (100ft) steel charter yacht “Spirit of the East” built in Turkey. Click here to see more about these and other projects.
I was also the first naval architect to be involved in the project to produce the magnificent 88ft Royal Rowbarge “Gloriana”. I worked on the project for 14 months from April 2011 until the Diamond Jubilee Pageant on June 3rd 2012. Click here for my story of creating Gloriana.
In addition to the marine design work, I offer an extensive range of specialist consultancy services including computer hull models, stability assessment, the production of vessel stability booklets for MCA Codes & other regulations, damage survivability analysis, RCD compliance, performance prediction for powered and sailing craft, rig design, sea trials and technical advice.
Most recreational and commercial craft are now required to comply with Regulations, Codes or Standards, usually intended to ensure their stability and safety. I have assessed a large number of craft for compliance with stability and other aspects of current regulations and am well placed to advise on this.
My design office is set up to utilise the benefits of computer technologies and CAD with large-format colour plotting of drawings. Typically the 3D hull design and analysis is carried out using the superb Maxsurf suite from Australia with AutoCAD LT used for drawings and detailing. Numerical design files generated here are regularly used for subsequent CADCAM operations such as cutting of panels or patterns for mould tools. I also offer specialist training courses on the Maxsurf suite at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
Based on the south coast of the UK, close to the River Hamble and just across the Solent from the famous yachting centre of Cowes, my office is less than four miles from J8 or J9 of the M27 motorway.
